A sample recipe is set out below with an image of the fly. Also included are the tying instructions for the pattern. We are in the design stages of a number of CD’s that have complete instructions for tying each pattern.

Tying Instructions:

Wing:

Start the thread behind the eye of the hook a distance of one hook eye. The bead chain is to be tied in one hook eye length behind the eye of the hook. Use 5 figure eight wraps and 4 over under wraps to attach the eyes.

Body:

Attach the Maxibraid behind the eyes. Bind to the hook with thread to a point over the barb of the hook. Return the thread to in front of the bead chain eyes. Wind the Maxibraid evenly back to the bead chain eyes and wrap over the eyes under the hook shank and over the eyes finishing on the bottom of the hook, tie off and trim Maxibraid. Turn hook upside down in the vice so that the hook point rides up.

Tying Instructions

Eyes:

Start the thread behind the eye of the hook a distance of one hook eye. The bead chain is to be tied in one hook eye length behind the eye of the book. Use 5 figure eight wraps and 4 over under wraps to attach the eyes.

Body:

Tie a sparse bunch of calf tail in front of the bead chain eyes so it extends past the bend of the hook a distance equal to the gap of the hook.

Topping:

Use 3 to 4 strands doubled over of Krystal flash. Tie the topping on top of and centred over the head and cut to the same length as the wing.

Head:

Form a small neat head of tying thread behind the eye of the hook. The back of the head next to the eyes should be the same diameter as the body behind the eyes. Whip finish and trim the thread

Bead Chain

Flat mylar tinsel over wrapped with clear V-Rib or Larva Lace

Calf tail

Krystalflash

Tie a sparse bunch of calf tail in front of the bead chain eyes so it extends past the bend of the hook a distance equal to the gap of the hook.

Attach the V-Rib curved side down behind the bead chain eyes. Bind to the hook with thread to a point over the barb of the hook. Return the thread to behind the bead chain eyes. Tie in the mylar tinsel, silver side up and bind to the top of the hook shank to a point over the hook barb.

Return the thread to in front of the bead chain eyes. Wind the mylar evenly back to the bead chain eyes and wrap over the bead chain eyes under the hook shank and over the bead chain eyes finishing on the bottom of the hook. Tie off and trim the mylar. Wind the V-Rib evenly back to the bead chain eyes and wrap over the bead chain eyes under the hook shank and over the bead chain eyes finishing on the bottom of the hook, tie off and trim the V-Rib. Turn hook upside down in the vice so that the hook point rides up.

Topping:

Use 3 to 4 strands doubled over of krystal flash. Tie the topping on top of and centred over the head and cut to the same length as the wing.
